Breakfast to remember for a life time – Chikkanna Tiffin Room

January 19, 2017

Dosa is my favorite dish & can go to any place to get good one. I have visited most of the legendary breakfast places in Bangalore & other towns as well.

In recent times, I have addicted to Khali Dose & Masala Dose at Chikkanna Tiffin Room. A 52 years old joint started by a person Yelakki Chikkanna & his brother in Cubbonpet, which is the heart of city.

How different is this from other hotels in Bangalore? Well, Dosa preparation would be same at most of the places. However ratio of the ingredients and usage makes all the difference. The food preparation procedure is certainly homemade style and totally contradict to the Darshini or other restaurants in the City.

Ambience – An old house is undergone a makeover into a simple hotel with serving counter and wooden benches. There are several old joints like SLN Lunch Home, Siddappa Hotel and Muddanna in the town, where there will be similar environment.

What do we get here? As I mentioned in the earlier posts, people in Bangalore show too much love towards their staple food, such as Idly, Dose and Rice Baths. Even Chikkanna Tiffin Room serves the same dishes. However, it tastes out of the world.

What dishes I prefer? I would love to eat any South Indian breakfast dish without any complaints but it should be tasty & spicy. Whenever I visit Chikkanna Tiffin Room, I will start from Single or Double Khali Dosa with few spoons of Ghee topped. The Khali Dosa here is soft and toasted on both sides and not too fluffy. The Dosa topped with Aloo based Saagu & Chutney is another amazing treat. The Saagu & Chutney are medium spiced, so it will be suitable for everyone. Believe me, you will enjoy every bite of it. The quality & taste hasn’t changed from the time I am visiting.

Masala Dose – They serve Mini & Regular Ghee Masala Dosas. I would prefer taking Mini, since I have to keep some space for the next dish. The Masala Dosa over here is crispy outside & soft inside filled with Aloo Palya. They serve thick Chutney for Masala Dose. The Dark Brown Doses are top notch & cannot be compared with any other places.

Rice Bath aka Masala Rice – I would prefer taking 1/2 rice. The Rice Bath over is soft and loaded with Indian spices like cloves, cinnamon, onion, tomato and green chilies. Not everyone will like Rice Bath in the morning. Since most of the people avoid rice, I would suggest taking a portion if you are going in a group. The Rice Bath is topped with Chutney & Saagu! Don’t forget to ask for Ghee to the Rice Bath.

Idly – There is nothing special about here. But give it a shot, you might love it.

Where is Chikkanna Tiffin Room Located? It’s located in one of the cross roads of Cubbonpet Main Road. If you are coming from Town Hall towards Majestic, there is a Halasuru Gate Police Station and you should take immediate left and drive for 200 meters and take assistance from locals.

Is it preferable to go with family? Definitely yes! If you go on weekends, will see all the three generations. But, difficult to get place inside. So you might have to stand & eat outside.

  1. Do try SK Tiffin Room as well, which is about another 200 metres down the same road. It’s just as good, but with different chutney.
