Well spent day at eco friendly event organised by Gathr in association with Alembic Real Estates

March 22, 2017

I had a thought in my mind on the drastic change of our changing lifestyle in recent times and have communicated this in many forum with my friends. Basically the thought is on the way our lives have evolved. We are in era, where there is no respect for human values. Kids in the current generation are keen about gadgets, computer games, and do not intend to learn local languages, and physical activities. Children along with elders now like food from international chains. The 90’s kids in Bangalore life was like 9 to 4 School, Games in school grounds, Action English movie, Visit to park, Snacks would be ideally Pani Puri and Masala Puri, water park visit once in a while and dining out was mostly at legendary south Indian restaurants. The lives during those days was beautiful. Since, there were no Cell Phones, no Computer Games, TV in very few homes and favorite pass time used to be spending time with family members and going out for picnic. There was so much to share and care. That’s why there were so many joint families in the past. Do we see all these now? Yes, may be 5 percent of the current population and that’s certainly not in the city.

I am a kind of person who would love to spend my time with family and friends more than hanging around. Also, I always love to recall my memories and in fact, I feel nostalgic when I visit few places in the town. I will be happy to stand in an hour queue for Vidyarthi Bhavan dose.

As time flew, we are out of many habits which we had practiced for few years now. But, yes I was triggered to share this past experiences today as I happened to get closer to nature and our old habits through one of the recently happened events.

I witnessed an event at Whitefield. I never thought, Whitefield in Bangalore has such a good green land. Well, it was an event organized by Gathr in association with Alembic Real Estates in one of their properties. I was super excited to visit based on the details shared in the online portals. When I saw the venue, I got goosebumps. I recalled my school grounds and the beautiful memories associated with that.

Well, the event started with registration followed by edible gardening. A person who had deep knowledge about the edible gardening demonstrated on how to make your own garden! The kids at the event were excited in the workshop and they thoroughly enjoyed by planting the edible plants.

Below are the steps to be followed while you do edible gardening

1. Plant in a sunny location. Vegetables need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. The more sunlight they receive, the greater the harvest and the better the taste.

2. Plant in good soil. Plants’ roots penetrate soft soil easily, so you need nice loamy soil. Enriching your soil with compost provides required nutrients. Proper drainage will ensure that water neither collects on top nor drains away too quickly.

3. Space your crops properly. For example, corn needs a lot of space and can overshadow shorter vegetables. Plants set too close together compete for sunlight, water, and nutrition and fail to mature. Pay attention to the spacing guidance on seed packets and plant tabs.

4. Buy high-quality seeds. Seed packets are less expensive than individual plants. If seeds don’t germinate, your money—and time—are wasted. A few “extra” cents spent in spring for that year’s seeds will pay off in higher yields during harvest.

It’s certainly difficult to grow all vegetables. But, if you grow at least 10%, that will make a difference. These days, we see organic everywhere. But, we don’t know how original it is!

The next activity was Kavade Games. How many of you heard about Kavade Games? Again it links to my childhood memories. If you never heard, here it is. Traditional games have been a part of our culture for centuries now. Mindboggling variations of these games are played in different parts of the world. Plunge into this treasure chest & you are sure to enjoy whatever comes out of it. It’s certainly required for kids to know about past and games used to play by their parents. I enjoyed playing with one of my friends especially VIMANAM, A Race Game for 2 on canvas played with wooden counters & cowrie shells. This game helps in stimulating the logic and strategy. Next game we played was ALUGULIMANE, I remember playing this game with my neighbor friends during my schooling and this game stimulates Counting, Logic, hand eye coordination and Concentration. There were few other traditional games, which we couldn’t play due to crowd.

By the time we finished our games, it was lunch time and we were hungry too. I was happy to see Bhukkad Counter. The lunch was Salad, Mexican Rice Bowl, Barbecue Veg and Non Veg along with some fresh juices. I would say, food was fabulous and the ingredients were fresh. I could see happy faces while eating the food. A big thanks to Bhukkad team for serving such a wonderful lunch!

There were few pillows and dry grass to rest on. Grass was used for common accessories during 90’s especially when you are on picnic and travelling to carnivals on bullock carts. It’s such a beautiful experience to sleep on dry grass. If you feel uncomfortable, bed spread can be put on dry grass.

There were some outdoor games like Zip Lane, rappelling and much more. Unfortunately, we had to give chance for kids to participate. Events like this give an opportunity for today’s kids to get closer with nature. Looking forward for more.

And there was a tree walk followed by the music concert from one of the bands. I totally loved & would happy to visit this kind of events in future too!
